Real Wedding // Kate and Mike Hewitt

From Wedding Essentials Bride Blogger, Miss Heartland: By the Monday before our wedding, I was checking the 10 day forecast every hour and it was looking like a 30% chance of rain and 85 degrees, not too bad for an outdoor wedding. Our final projects were punching holes in 350 lemon leaves, rolling 350 napkins, finalizing flowers, getting final numbers to the caterers, contacting all of the vendors to make certain everything was on as planned, etc.  On Wednesday I had a relaxing lunch with my fiance and one of his best friends from England, then went on to all my appointments: waxing, spray tanning, hair, and teeth cleaning.  I wanted to make sure I was in tip top shape for the most important day of my life!

On Thursday the butterflies began.  By then a few things had to be changed with the “wedding plans,” but I promise you it didn’t do any good getting mad, it just made everyone else stressed out too.  We quickly learned that the most important thing was still going to happen, Mike and I were going to be married in 2 days.  My mother and our wedding planner, Juli, tackled all of the changes that were taking place in the background! Every bride needs a mom, a friend, and a wedding planner to help with any of the stressors that inevitably come up, no matter how much you’ve planned.

Friday started off as a day of pampering for the girls and a fun day of golf for the guys and then came the rehearsal dinner at Firethorn Golf Course, hosted by my fiance’s parents. Once the (delicious!) food was served and everyone had a few drinks, the night turned a bit emotional … Both sets of parents got up and said a few words and I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house. Their words were so encouraging and touching, neither of us had ever been happier than we were that moment.  Then our friends said such kind things, we realized how lucky we both were to have such a huge support system around us!

The Big Day

At 6:30 a.m. I jumped out of bed with a grin on my face which lasted nearly 48 hours.  I ate breakfast with all my best friends and we were off to W Hair Studio to get dolled up for the day. We caravanned out to the wedding site inMalcolm,NEand everything looked magnificent — like straight out of a movie, I was speechless.  The tent was set up, the decorators were perfecting every detail, the caters getting final numbers squared away, Juli was running around like crazy, and me … I was surprisingly calm, to be honest.

One of my bridesmaids said,  “I mean this out of love, but I totally imagined you would be bridezilla, but you are not.” There was nothing to be bridezilla about, ohhh  well nothing except the 50% chance of rain and some severe storms, that were set to come through at or around 6:00.  Did I mention that our ceremony was outdoors and that it started at 5:30 p.m.?

The last thing I said to my father before beginning our trek down the isle was, ” Please make sureto not let me fall okay?” The guests were all smiles while watching, the music was beautifully playing and I don’t think I’ve ever been this happy in all my life, this very moment while all eyes are on you, you realize how unbelievabl yblessed you are and that life always happens for a reason.  As we said our I Do’s, two geese (which are said to “mate for life”) flew by in the background. It was quite the omen and everyone at the ceremony was awestruck.  I think someone asked, “Didthey plan to have those geese fly by?”

The Rain

As soon as we were pronounced husband and wife, we ran down the isle, and not a second after we got inside, the rain came a pouring!!!!  All of our guests sprinted down into the reception tent. Yes, the storms were coming, Yes it was going to rain on our wedding day, but guess what… it held out for the ceremony and hey, a little rain is good luck (I could havegone without the 60 MPH winds that nearly knocked the tent over, but hey, what can you do).

Ever After

We all ran down to the tent, trying not to get soaked in the process.  I took a moment before entering to “take it all in.” It was another one of those moments of, awe that I wanted to push pause, to see that this many people came here for us, to watch us get married was such a beautiful moment. We spent the rest of the evening soaking it all in as husband and wife, we danced to our amazing band, DFUNK, talked to all our guests, laughed, cried, and most importantly we loved every minute of it together. We knew that this was the beginning of an absolutely amazing life together!!!!!!!!

Engaged: Miss Heartland

From Miss Heartland:

Wedding Essentials Magazine OmahaBride Blogger Miss Heartland for Wedding Essentials Magazine OmahaAbout 5 months after we got engaged, it was engagement photos time!  We decided to get pictures taken at the Tavern (the bar where we met) and also out in Malcolm (where the wedding is) because their land is absolutely breath taking!  I knew from the moment that I got engaged, that I was going to ask one of my best friends sisters, Taura Horn, owner of TauraHorn Photography, to do my engagement and wedding photos.  She quickly agreed and Mike and I had such an awesome time with her that day.   We started at the Tavern and took some other really cool shots in the Haymarket area in downtown Lincoln, and then we caravaned out to Malcolm and had a blast!  Taura was so much fun to work with and I would recommend her to any bride or groom out there, and grooms just so you know, my fiance actually had a great time taking our photos, I think his exact line was, “Can we do is all over again,” and he was being 100% serious, he had a great time, we both did!  We loved our engagement photos so much, that we decided to use some of the pictures in our save the dates that we sent out.  My great friend and bridesmaid, Amalia, came up with the wonderful and creative artwork for our save the dates and I could not have loved them anymore.  They were perfect, exactly what I wanted!

Why choose a wedding theme?

From Miss Heartland:

Once the “cloud nine” phase of being engaged wore off (actually I am not sure that has really happened yet)  I realized that I better start planning.  My mom and I dug in at full spee,d having little to no idea what we were about to get ourselves into.  We decided to start with all of the “big stuff,”  so that all the vendors that we wanted to use were not all booked up.

The first thing we did was contact my wedding planner and mom’s good friend, Julie.  She just happens to own the house that Mr. Heartland and I are getting married at, how convenient huh?  Julie is amazing and like I said in my bio, I have known that I wanted to get married at her house ever since I was a little girl.  The day I got engaged, she called my mom in excitement and said, “let the planning begin!!!!”  I think Julie and my mom had talked about this moment for months and couldn’t wait for it be official so we could start planning my dream day!

About a week later, Julie, my mom and I got together out in Malcolm and began throwing ideas around about what my vision was for the wedding.  What kind of food, d.j or band, buffet or served dinner, themes, colors, number of guests, date, etc. etc. etc …  I was immediately overwhelmed and thought, where do I even begin?  I decided that a checklist was the only possible way to keep track of what I needed to be doing on a month to month basis.  A checklist and a binder that is to keep everything organized.  For the next three or four months, I just began looking through magazines, browsing the Internet and talking with friends to decide on the direction that I wanted our wedding to take.  I finally decided on a nature-inspired, rustic-chic wedding.

Once the theme was set in stone, it made the other decisions so much easier because at least it gave us some direction.  I found a ton of awesome ideas, the hard part was putting all of these ideas together and making them flow.  That is where my friends and wedding planner played a huge part, they have kept me sane throughout this process that is for sure!

Gambling our wedding date

Save the date photo strip for Wedding Essentials Magazine in Omaha NebraskaFrom Miss Heartland:

Planning the wedding, for Mr. Heartland and I, started with choosing our wedding date. For many people this is stressful, overwhelming and frustrating due to dates booking up quickly. But for us it was the start of a new tradition (one that we try to limit to special occasions… you’ll see why!)

The day after we got engaged, we went to have some lunch at Brewsky’s, a bar and grill down the street from our house, and we decided that the way to choose our wedding date was to bet on KENO.  I know some of you are thinking, “you did what?!”  Seems strange, I know, but it was a ton of fun.  What we did was place 2 small bets with 2 different dates using numbers of course.  We played 6 and 2 for June 2nd and 5, 19 and 12 for May 19th, 2012. (we didn’t want any of the numbers to overlap)  We decided to play 4 games with each bet and see if the numbers hit and if not we would choose different dates and play again!  To our surprise, 5,19 and 12 hit on the 4th game and we WON a little bit of money but more importantly, that set the date for our big day!!!!  I know we can’t let KENO decide our future all the time, so you see why we’ll limit ourselves to special occasions.

The best Cinco de Mayo EVER

From Miss Heartland

Cinco de Mayo is one of my favorite days because I was a Spanish minor in college & have always loved celebrating this holiday.  Mr. Heartland knew how much I loved this day.  The morning of Cinco de Mayo last year, he said, “Let’s plan to go to dinner tonight to celebrate Cinco de Mayo,” and before he could finish his sentence I screamed ”PERFECT!”  I was so excited.

I was texted a few of my girlfriends about meeting up with Mr. Heartland and myself after dinner for some margaritas.  They all responded that they couldn’t make it until about 8.  I said fine, but you know me, my bed time is usually 8:30, so hurry up =).

While I was at work, Mr. Heartland texted that he was going to be running a little late, but would pick me up around 6:30 for dinner.  When we got to Carmellas, the hostess seemed really excited that we were there … kind of weird I thought?  But I brushed it off and she sat us in the very back corner.

The waiter poured us some water but before I could ask to have something else to drink, he was gone.  I was confused.  All I wanted was my glass of wine, and that is what I told Mr. Heartland.  Mr. Heartland quickly changed the subject and said, “What are you having for dinner?”  I said, “Oh my goodness I don’t know I haven’t ordered a drink yet.”  He kept insisting that I look at the menu to decide on dinner, so finally I gave in.

As I opened up the menu, the song “Feels Like Home” by Chatal  came on over the stereo system.  I looked down and there was a note inside my menu.  I began to read it, tearing up.

Before I could finish the letter, Mr. Heartland l said, ”Do you remember what I said would happen the next time we heard this song?”  I shook my head, ”No.” “What?” He said, “I told you that the next time we heard this song would be the day I ask you to marry me.”

He then got down on his knee (for what seemed like an eternity, he later told me) and asked me to make him the happiest man in the world and be his wife.  I was literally speechless.  He said,” honey… are you going to say anything???”  I said, “Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, YES YES YES!”

We hugged and kissed while the whole restaurant clapped and cheered for us!  The waiter then came back with a bottle of champagne, which explains why he never asked me for a drink.

After we’d had about 2 glasses of champagne and maybe two bites of our meals, we headed over to the Venue because Mr. Heartland said he wasn’t done celebrating.  As we walked into the lounge, we were greeted by clapping and everyone was cheering for us.  Mr. Heartland had contacted all of my best friends and my family, and they were all waiting there to celebrate our engagement with us.  It was truly a picture-perfect night I will never forget.

The only thing I wish we had is more photos. In the excitement of it all, that wasn’t my major focus.  So for any men out there that are reading this post, be sure to have someone on camera duty when you propose. =)

The story of how I met Mr. Heartland

November 13th, 2010 began like any other Husker Saturday for me.  Early morning run,  breakfast, shower, decking out into my Husker best, and heading to tailgate in downtown Lincoln.

This Saturday, I was with my brother and his wife and since my sister-in-law was getting pretty chilly, we went to The Tavern on the Square, where one of my friends was bar-tending.  My brother started talking sports with a guy at the bar and my sister-in-law began chatting away with a gal.

A little while later, as my brother and his wife were getting ready to leave me to head to the game, I asked my brother, “hey Jas, who was that cute guy you were talking to at the bar?”   My sister-in-law butt-in saying (and pointing), “That guy up there at the bar?  That is the brother of the cute gal I was chatting with.  She LOVES her brother, says he is the best guy in the world.”

I found myself wondering all sorts of things in my head… is he single? Where does he live? Does he think I’m cute? Etc. etc.  My sister-in-law offered to ask his sister the scoop before we head to the game.   She returned 5 minutes later: he is single, coast is clear! And off they went to the game.

After  a while (and after a little liquid courage) I decided to take a seat next to the mystery guy at the bar and talk to my bar-tending friend.  She said, turning to the guy next to me, “This is the girl that I wanted to introduce you to, but you told me that you don’t like blondes…”

I became a bit sassy, and teased, “Ohhh you don’t like blondes huh?”  He said, “Well I do like brown eyes, did you know that you had brown eyes?”  I retorted, “Yes, thank you, I did know that.”
He then asked me if I had heard all three versions of that song, and I told him that I knew the one song that everyone knows and loves to dance to.  He insisted that there are better versions out there.  “Why don’t you give me your phone number and I will text you the artist?”  I laughed and said, “Wow, that is one pick up line that I have never heard.”  He snapped back with, “If I wanted your phone number I would have just asked for it.”

We spent the next 2 hours on those bar stools chatting and getting to know each another.  We had totally fallen for one another & have been nearly inseparable ever since that cold Husker Football Saturday.  For those of you that say, you can’t meet Mr. or Ms. Right at a bar… I totally disagree.  Maybe it just needs to be a Husker bar.
