Summertime Drinks

With warm weather upon us, I thought it was time to share a couple of summertime cocktails. For you brides who have yet to pin down your signature drink for your wedding day, these are two options that would satisfy almost any wedding goer.

This  first drink was concocted using a Food Network lemonade recipe.  It was twisted into a refreshing gin drink that gets even the non-gin drinkers begging for more.

rosemary gin lemonade cocktail

• 2 small sprigs fresh rosemary, plus more for serving (optional)
• Kosher salt
• 1 cup fresh lemon juice, or more to taste
• 1/2 cup agave nectar or other natural sweetener, or more to taste
• Gin
• Seltzer Water
• Lemon slices, for serving (optional)

Directions (for the lemonade):
Bring 6 cups water to a boil in a saucepan. Remove from heat and add the rosemary and a pinch of salt. Cover and steep, 30 minutes. Strain into a pitcher and cool to room temperature.
Stir the lemon juice, agave nectar and 2 cups cold water into the pitcher. Add more lemon juice or agave nectar to taste.
To Make the Drink:
Pour two ounces of Gin into a glass filled with ice, top with Rosemary Lemonade and finish with a splash of seltzer water. Garnish with a lemon wedge and a sprig of rosemary.

The second recipe is just plain bubbly and delicious. It is perfect for the bride who doesn’t want to have a “signature” drink, but still has a champagne toast. Add a little creativity to the toast by kicking the normal champagne up a notch.

Pomegranate Champagne Cocktail

  • 1oz. Pomegranate Juice
  • 4oz. Chilled Champagne

In a Champagne flute, pour in the pomegranate juice. Top with Champagne
Garnish with pomegranate seeds or raspberries if desired.

ENJOY!

Inspiration // Vintage Backyard Wedding

This wedding reception, full of vintage and earthy details, took place in the backyard of the bride’s parents home. The location was obviously so personal to the bride, but her event shined with other DIY details making the event a true personal expression of the bride herself.

The bride and groom mingle with guests at their backyard reception.

White vintage lanterns dotted the lawn, and twinkle lights were strung over an area where cocktail hour took place. Her place cards were made into little flags and arranged on a mossy base. Vintage lawn furniture with different fabrics sat at random intervals in the grass, offering laid back seating areas for guests. Wedding pictures of family members were placed on the tables bringing in yet another personal touch. Loosely arranged flowers added pops of colors in the lush backyard.

A dinner tent was also in the backyard. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I walked in…there were live TREES sprawling from floor to ceiling amidst long rows of tables. It created an atmosphere like none other—guests felt like they were dining in an enchanted forest!

One other playful detail that I still laugh at when I see the picture: the earplugs she placed out for guests who may find the music too loud!

Always remember to make your wedding day an expression of who you are…just like this bride did.
Don’t be swayed by the visions and opinions of others because after all—this day is all about YOU!

Orchid Inspiration

Intimidated by orchids?  Not sure how to use them?  I’m here to help and I have pictures to inspire you!

I recently attended a wedding that was positively dripping with orchids, in every species I could imagine.  The luxurious flowers were EVERYWHERE.  The most amazing part?  No two arrangements were alike!  Each one had its own unique style, yet they tied together stunningly.  The bold colors of the exotic blooms popped against black and white table décor and created a truly jaw dropping scene.

Orchids of every color

White Orchids and Striped orchids

If your budget doesn’t quite measure up to this high-end orchid extravaganza, don’t fret!  You can still produce this same look with monochromatic arrangements laced with less expensive, bold-colored blooms.  Simply set your mix and match arrangements against black and white table toppers, just as they did here.  Copy their linen style by using multiple different textures and patterns. I absolutely loved the polka dot tabletops with full-bodied skirts: it gave the tables a lil’ cheeky attitude!

One of the many tables that excited me was this glass topped one.  Can’t seem to find a rental like the one here?  Go to Home Depot (or any other home goods store) and get a large mirror to place in the middle of the table.  It will function as a table runner and you’ll accomplish the same double-impact, stunning effect.

Sumptuous colors and textures like these are easy to get inspired by.  Such an impressive variety of orchids doesn’t hurt the imagination either!

Your Grandmother’s China

It’s always refreshing when you go to a wedding and find yourself faced with décor that is totally unexpected.  That is exactly what happened at this wedding, I was simply speechless.  Who would ever think succulents mixed with antique family heirlooms could create such a stunning sight; I know I would have never dreamed it!

The venue that housed this wedding is very similar to Omaha’s Botanical Center. It provides space that flawlessly transforms into functional yet beautiful areas that are needed for an event.  The card table was the first thing I noticed upon entering the center. You saw the bride’s entire décor vision in one 5 by 1 foot table. Organic materials mixed with vintage china pieces, along with succulent flowers and orchids…so out of the ordinary!  The bride had collected the blue and white china from relatives which added such a personal touch to the event.  You could be surrounded by treasures at your Grandmother’s house that would be perfect for your wedding day and never even know it if it weren’t for this clever bride’s idea!

A great way to make your place card table really stand out and make an impact

Deep Tones of Orchids were placed on the place card table

Then came the table arrangements. Each and every one was unique.  The vases, along with all the flowers, were different on each table.  You may automatically think blue and white antiques can only fit which particular flowers—this bride proved that was not the case!  She incorporated branches, cabbage, succulents, strange pods, all of which are extremely earthy flowers.  They looked amazing together.

One of my favorite pops that stood out from everything—the bride walked down the aisle carrying pale garden roses.  They didn’t match any of the other arrangements which is why it made them so great.  They were  made for the bride and bride only!

Take notes the next time you visit your Grandmother’s house—who knows, she may hold the key to your wedding décor!

Homemade Yet High-end

This Connecticut Vineyard wedding is one I can’t help but share with you! I know, you’re thinking, “it’s
a vineyard wedding. This isn’t Napa. How am I supposed to take inspiration from this?” But there are
vineyards in Nebraska! And there’s no doubt you’ll be inspired by this bride’s creative vision.

A champagne toast on a wedding day

First off, the “I do’s.” They were spoken amidst the grapevines, with crisp white trellis and flowers
offsetting the bright blue sky. The bride and groom set their sophisticated yet homey vibe from the
get go, with two butlers serving up fresh lemonade in mason jars as guests arrived for the ceremony. A
huge wooden table top set upon oak wine barrels added warmth to the lemonade “bar.”

A massive Sperry tent covered fabulously long (think mid-evil feast long) tables, with each nook and
cranny brimming with personal touches! From the bird shaped place cards, to the adorable love bird salt and pepper shakers, to the color coordinated pashminas and flip flops, this bride had her hand in every single aspect of the celebration.

On each table were silver frames reminding people to grab “homemade sweet treats.” And refreshingly,
“homemade” actually meant HOMEMADE. The bride herself baked the festive desserts and created a
dessert bar all her own, giving guests the option to either enjoy on the spot or take home.

The mix of cozy touches with sleek high-end details combined to create one perfectly designed fete!
This wedding is definitely easy to draw inspiration from–maybe some of the ideas will be incorporated
into the wedding of your dreams!

The New in Dinner Service

Who knew there were so many choices when it comes to serving your guests on your wedding day?  I can honestly say I had no idea how many options existed until stepping through the doors of the catering company I now work for.  I walked into a world of seemingly endless service options!  There’s plated and buffet—which most everyone knows of,  and then there are Stations, Cocktail Style service, Russian service, Family Style, French service… the list goes on and on.  I wanted to take a minute and give you a brief education about two styles we are seeing more and more out here on the East Coast.

blue cheese topped steak, chicken two ways

The first being Family Style Dining:
This option is a perfect for a bride looking to have a sit down dinner, but doesn’t want it to be super formal. This service helps guests feel “right at home,” and offers guests a variety of options. Food is prepared, placed on big beautiful platters (if you have a good caterer) and set on the table for guests to pass at their leisure—just as if you were sitting at the Sunday dinner table with your own family. This also allows guests to pick and choose what they would like to eat, without being as extensive as a buffet. This style also eliminates people having to choose “beef or chicken” beforehand which means less tracking and organizing for you!
Family Style dishes filled with meat and potato options

The second and rapidly growing in popularity is Russian Style Service:
This style is popping up more and more out here. It’s Family Style Dining with a higher-end feel. Food is prepared and arranged just like Family Style, but the waitstaff does not leave the food on the tables. Instead, the staff walks around each table serving guests from a variety of food he/she has to offer. This requires a larger number of servers, and therefore will cost you a bit more than Family Style or a plated dinner, but it makes for an impressive service.
Don’t get overwhelmed with options. First decide what kind of feel you want guests to have on your wedding day. If you find yourself a good caterer, they will be able to point you in the direction that is right for you!

Signature Cocktails

Signature cocktails are a fantastic way to treat your guests and add yet another personal touch to your wedding day.  Creating a specialty drink to match not only your taste, but the theme and colors of your event, can only make your wedding reception that much better.  Let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a good beverage at a wedding?!

There are so many good drink recipes floating around the internet these days. Start searching for ideas–our pinterest page can jump start your search! Bring the recipes and ideas to your caterer to recreate or simply ask them for suggestions. I’ve included one recipe idea to get you thinking (it’s seriously amazing).

Easy placecard ideas

It’s those last minute preparations that really drive home the point: your big day is fast approaching! And what’s one of the main things that you absolutely cannot do until late in the game?  Seating charts. You have to wait until you have all of your RSVPs…ugh!

But there is a bright spot:  Place cards.

There is so much room for creativity and personalization when it comes to place cards and yet, they are often a detail that brides completely overlook. You don’t have to spend a ton of time on these.  Simply picking paper in shades that tie in with your wedding colors and arranging them with precision can have quite the effect.
Letting the florist do most of the work on the card table is also a great way to save you time and draw a lot of attention to a detail we all know is important…I mean who isn’t anxious to figure out if they are sitting with the hot single guy or (please no) Aunt Dottie?

Combining the guests’ favors along with their table number is smart way to ensure that guests actually pick up their table card. (Added benefit: it also lets you off the hook from worrying if they will remember to get their favors).

So for you creative girls–there are so many fun things you can do.  Look at what these brides came up with:Sometimes it’s the simplest of details that end up making a lasting impression with your guests.  Get creative—or don’t—but just don’t overlook those all-important little name cards.

Let Them Eat Mini Pies

I’m officially obsessed with cake displays and all things mini. When it comes to wedding desserts people automatically think tall, multi-tiered cakes. Some think you must have a wedding cake because what else would you have?! Cupcakes have pushed their way into the all-important dessert slot on many wedding menus but are slowly making their way out. So what are other alternatives?

Take that traditional wedding cake and stop stacking the layers on top of each other already! Take each layer, make it unique, and place each one on a different funky cake stand. It creates the most beautiful table and is sure to wow your guests. You can incorporate your wedding color and theme in the cakes along with the stands and fabrics that surround them.

You can also combine the cakes with other delectable treats such as Whoopie Pies (huge trend), macaroons, meringues, or any other desserts that delight your taste buds (while looking adorable of course).

Don’t like cake at all? Then skip the cake and go for a full dessert bar, or opt to serve each table their own little tier of assorted after-dinner delights. Mini pies are always another good alternative and who doesn’t love pie?! After all, nobody ever said you have to serve cake at a Wedding!

In case your mother hates the idea of leaving out this nuptial tradition, opt for a small inexpensive cake just for her place setting to make her feel special and to show her you didn’t forgo it all together.

From top: Mini eclairs, dessert verrines, mini lemon curd tartlets and cannolis, all on silver platters; non-traditional cake display; whoopie pies; creme puffs and eclaires; personal pies and mini tarts; cheesecake lollipops; macaroons; meringues. Photos by Molly Lorincz
